Atlanta Maternity Shoot in Water

How to Nail your Georgia Maternity Shoot in Water

Are you an expecting mama planning your maternity shoot in Georgia? First off—CONGRATS! Becoming a mom is one of the greatest blessings, and I’m beyond excited for you as you get ready to welcome your little one! Second, as an Atlanta Wedding Photographer, I never imagined I’d fall in love with maternity shoots—until Megan and Chris’s session totally changed that! In this blog, I’m spilling 5 tips to make sure your maternity photos are anything but the typical bump pics you see all over Pinterest. Think dreamy, whimsical vibes or a dramatic water shoot that’ll leave you completely wowed!

When Your Maternity Shoot in Water Becomes Art

When Megan reached out about documenting her maternity session, I had no idea the gallery would turn out this magical (in the best way possible)! Her vision for these photos still leaves me in awe. The raw emotion captured in each shot perfectly reflects the deep love Megan and Chris share for each other and their soon-to-arrive little one.

So, how do you capture out-of-the-box maternity photos that look nothing like your Pinterest inspo board?

1. Choosing Your Maternity Outfit Colors

The water here has this gorgeous green-blue hue, thanks to the trees and sky reflecting off it, so vibrant colors totally shine! Neutrals can look amazing too. Since you’re surrounded by nature, you’ll want to stand out rather than blend in. That’s why choosing a cream or white outfit is perfect—it’ll really pop in your maternity photos!

For Megan’s first outfit, she chose the most stunning brown bodycon dress that beautifully showcased her sweet bump! The deep brown color was the perfect choice—it didn’t blend into the scenery, but actually added to it, making the whole session feel even more connected to the natural surroundings!

2. Challenge the Norm and Be In the Moment

During the entire maternity shoot, Megan and Chris were so locked in on each other, fully embracing the beauty of this special chapter in their lives. I always say this, but how you show up to your session truly reflects the emotion that comes through in your photos. With my stylized documentary approach, I focus on capturing those raw, genuine moments that tell the real story—and this session was no exception!

I’m so glad Megan brought Chris along for her maternity shoot at Lake Acworth! This is such a special moment for both of them, and you can feel the excitement and anticipation in every single photo. Not to be dramatic, but it’s like the love and joy they’re feeling just jumps off the screen, ha!

3. Be Intentional When Hiring Your Georgia Maternity Photographer

If your vision leans more toward candid, in-the-moment shots, an editorial photographer might not be the best fit for you. Instead, you’ll want someone who can capture those in-between moments—the ones that often go unnoticed but mean the most. Before booking, make sure to ask your photographer if they have past galleries that reflect the vibe you’re after. It’s so important that their style matches the feeling you want your photos to portray!

4. Select a Location that Fits the Emotion You Want to Portray

My goal every time I get behind the lens is to take a photo that will bring you right back to the moment that it was taken.

Lake Acworth is such a perfect spot for a maternity shoot in the water! The water is safe and non-toxic, plus you won’t have to worry about strong rip tides. And to top it all off, you get the most stunning sunset views across the lake, creating the dreamiest backdrop for your photos!

5. Tips for a Maternity Shoot in Water

  1. If you cannot see the bottom, do not go in!
  2. Avoid murky/still water
  3. Opt for an outfit that is flowy and light. You don’t want to wear any heavy fabrics while in the water!
  4. Wear water shoes, Chacos, Teva’s or some other kind of footwear that will keep you from slipping on any wet rocks or terrain.
  5. Opt for a sunrise or sunset session for that soft golden glow!

Loving this maternity shoot on water as much as I do? Save to your Pinterest maternity board for later so you don’t lose the inspo! Simply hover over the image you love, and press “save.”
